We hail fom Central Georgia, but live in our fifth Southeastern State — Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina (USA). I have been cooking Southern food for more that fifty (50) years. My mentors were my grandfather, my husband's favorite aunt, and several maids/cooks who worked in our home.
I guess the best cookbook you can own would be the all time favorite, "Joy Of Cooking." Although not ethnic, it has lots of basic cooking information in it. I've given it as a gift to all our family.
My favorite food is chicken, chicken, chicken and more chicken! I do a beef dish my family always liked. My kids once said I should open a restaurant and sell my potato soup.
As for favorite restaurants, there are many! Mama's in Franklin NC is excellent amd our favorite local eatery. Wonderful Fried Chicken! O'Steen's in St. Augsustine FL cannot be beat for great SHRIMP! Jim's Place, East is a great Greek Restaurant in Memphis TN. Pearl's Elegant Pelican has delicious seafood in Savannah GA — Especially good flounder. The Lighthouse on old US 41 East of Griffin GA has the very best catfish! There once was a memorial little French place in Mt. Dora FL - La Petit Auburge! Ah for food like that again. Best dessert place is Len Berg's in the Alley, Macon GA.
