This recipe is over 50 years-old. Keep that in mind when you count your tomatoes (I use 20 large instead of the 36 specified)

    Cook all ingredients, except sugar, over low heat, stirring often, until nearly thick enough, about 3 - 5 hours. Then add sugar. Stir regularly until thickened.
